The
emergence of new workplace hazards has prompted the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to
establish new testing procedures for respiratory products.
The new 42CFR 84 standard establishes new test performance
criteria for all air purifying respirators, filters and
pre filters. This new standard will be applicable to every
particulate respirator on the market when it comes into
effect. Respirators approved under the current NIOSH standard
are acceptable for use until July 10, 1998 (subject to
any changes in effective date made by NIOSH). After that
date, only respirators approved under the new 42CFR 84
standard (when used properly) will be in compliance with
new government regulations.
